( vote)Stephen Pearcy is best known for his halcyon days with Ratt in the 80s. Lately he’s more infamous for poor live performances. Despite the drama, he releases a fifth solo album his label describes as blistering rockers mixed with slower, more measured numbers that will please fans of his solo work and Ratt. The album cover is similar to the opening credits of a James Bond movie. Many of the tracks have lyrical references of the same but as a whole the album never seems to fully embrace the concept.
“U Only Live Twice” immediately removes any doubts Pearcy’s on stage troubles affect his studio work. This highlight rocker proves Pearcy still delivers his trademark snarl with depth and swagger. Follow up “Sky Falling” is derailed by discordant keyboards and an awkward chorus in what is otherwise a strong song. “Malibu” and “One In A Million” are throwaway bubble gum Metal. “Double Shot” gives the proceedings a much needed injection of aggression and attitude. The remaining songs descend into a morass of mediocrity with the notable of exception of “From The Inside”. Its opening riff is raw and menacingly heavy. Fortunately the guitar remains solidly in mix resulting in the most impressively heavy song on the album.
With the inconsistent references to Bond movies and overall average song writing, Thrill To A View is a martini which needs either more shaking, stirring, or maybe both. Thankfully, Pearcy’s fans will find the highlights redeeming.
