( vote)World famous and ageless guitar hero Marty Friedman has released a new live album. Recorded on one of the final nights of his latest tour, One Bad M.F. Live! gives listeners an honest and raw insight into a modern Marty Friedman live show. With essentially no backing tracks, Marty’s four-piece band burns through a mixture of modern tracks and Friedman classics. Many of his recent songs are featured, including “Whiteworm”, “Undertow”, “Self Pollution” and “Inferno”. These songs represent Marty’s “return to America” in recent years, while his more Japanese based material, like “Street Demon” and “Elixir” along with the legendary guitar anthem “Dragon Mistress” round out the set for the rest of the fans.
Although it’s not unexpected, the track list here is laden with songs that are from his last two albums. Much of his discography is underrepresented and a long time fan might find this set lacking from a historical perspective. That being said, the material that is included is well performed and recorded. As live recordings go, this sounds sharp and crisp but not over-produced. One Bad M.F. Live! retains a genuine live feeling that is often missing from modern live albums.
If you like Friedman’s new material then this will be an obvious choice for die-hard fans, however it doesn’t represent his overall career that well, despite the excellent execution.
