( vote)Fans of Primal Fear will be right at home with Purgatorio, the new album from Manimal. Riff based songs, in-your-face Painkiller influences, and Eric Adams worthy high notes abound on this no-nonsense Heavy Power Metal release.
While the songs are, at times, one dimensional and the record has a general by-the-numbers feel, the overall style is delivered so well that it will be hard for any true metalhead to find a song on Purgatorio that they don’t enjoy.
Album openers like “Black Plague” and the pseudo-self-titled “Manimalized” are standard, up-tempo late 80’s era Judas Priest style screamers. These are followed nicely with some slightly more contemporary sounding fast tracks on “Spreading The Disease” and “Traitor”. The album winds through more familiar territory and ends with a few heavy, slower tracks.
Overall, Purgatorio is totally lacking in any sort of pioneering agenda, but still delivers big on fun and excitement for the listener.
