( votes)Holdin’ All The Aces is the debut record from veteran guitarist Billy Morris and his new band Billy Morris and the Sunset Strip. Morris has been a member of several high profile acts as lead guitar, including Warrant, Quiet Riot, Tuff, and has performed with Mr. Big guitarist Paul Gilbert, and former Warrant vocalist Jaime St. James. Sunset Strip began its life as a cover band, and after signing with High Vol Records, recorded Holdin’ All The Ace. The record features Billy Morris on lead guitar and vocals, Rob Samay on guitar and vocals, Rob Brown on drums and vocals, and Paul Lewis on bass and vocals.
The debut single is titled “Party Like The Weekend Never Ends”, which, in all honesty, must be intended as an homage to “Feel Your Love Tonight” by Van Halen. It begins with a sample of the song, and the main riff is alluded to throughout. The record consists of 14 tracks, and there seems to be a bit of an identity crisis. The songs have decidedly different vibes throughout. Some straight ahead rock, like the title track “Holdin All The Aces”. Some odd timed and heavier stuff ala “Hook It Up.” Even some 80s pop influenced tracks like “Stop Me”, which reminds one of The Fixx. There is even a 90s vibe track, “Mr. Ed” with dissonant vocals and sort of funky rhythm. Talented performances and production and an eclectic vibe permeate Holdin’ All The Aces. Will you like it? You’ll just have to listen. Best places to start? The strongest songs are the title track, and “Don’t Know How To Quit”. Check it out.
