( vote)This 5 track EP by the Swedish metallers Secret Society is a fine helping of Modern Power Metal along the lines of CAGE, Outworld, and current-day Symphony X. Vocal layers are thick and the mix is busy, but well defined. The Induction is in some ways a throwback to some mid-2000s styles of Power Metal, but since this genre is not terribly concerned with yearly trends, this chronologically specific sound might not matter. Checkout “Broken Crutch” below for a taste of the release. That track is the EP opener and starts things off on the right foot. While “Broken Crutch” is knee deep in heavy Power Metal vibes, some of the other tracks, most notably “Mental Mayhem”, bring some slightly more Hair Metal elements, although only through hints and suggestions.
While this is certainly a fun release, there are times when the vocal melodies seem to wander a bit and lose the charisma that Power Metal is typically known for. Thanks to the solid album production methods used here, the songs always work, but there are times when certain passages border on forgetful.
Hopefully, as Secret Society moves forward, they can iron out the inconsistencies in their writing and execution, and increase the focus and clarity of their sound. An act like this would be right at home on the euro festival circuit. Hopefully, we’ll see them climb the ladder into the stratosphere of Modern Power Metal.
