( vote)It’s been ten years since the last Shadowkeep album, and in that time the band has not only rekindled the fire of metal in their hearts, but begun a new chapter of the band thanks to the introduction of a new singer. While this vocalist is new to Shadowkeep, James Rivera is already a well established metal singer as a result of his work in Helstar. His voice is perfect for Power Metal and brings Shadowkeep’s new, self-titled release up to a new level.
Aside from Rivera’s impressive vocal chops, Chris Allen and Nikki Robson’s guitars are a highlight of this album. With just the perfect amount of shredding and ear-splitting, cutting mid-range tone, the pair deliver a textbook perfect metal performance.
This is by no means a perfect album. There are many overused, stereotypical metal elements to be found and the album is lacking in variety and dimension, however, when Shadowkeep hits its stride, it comes close to metal perfection. One listen to the album opener “Angels And Omens” or the certifiably riot inducing “Guardian Of The Sea” and you’ll be looking for some wine glasses to shatter. Metal-in-your-face, blaster tracks are peppered throughout this album, and although “Minotaur” has some awkward moments, the high points of this release are exceptionally high and frequent enough to keep you listening and salivating the whole way through.
