( vote)It’s not often that a band sets out to make a guilty pleasure album. That seems to have been the goal with Mystic Prophecy’s Monuments Uncovered. This full length release is a collection of classic Pop tunes turned Metal. We’ve got tracks like Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” and Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” alongside more Rock leaning numbers like Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and Billy Squier’s “The Stroke”.
Some of these tracks work really well, like the Billy Squier tune, but others fall totally flat. This is not a slam on Mystic Prophecy’s skill, but rather a strong message that sometimes stylistic and genre changes just don’t work. If there’s possibly one major misstep by the band, it would be that the one-dimensional, hyper-compressed Modern Metal mixes leave these Pop tracks feeling sterile and lifeless.
All that being said, while some tracks are good and others not so good, the album cover is pure gold. Who ever thought Elton John could look so Metal?
If you’re a well-tempered metal head looking for a change, check out Monuments Uncovered. Even when it’s not firing on all cylinders, it’s still a fun ride.
