( vote)It should come as no surprise that Oz’s sound is reminiscent of Classic Metal acts like Grim Reaper, Iron Maiden, and RIOT, after all, those acts are all contemporaries of Oz, which was founded in the late 70’s. After enjoying success in the 80’s, Oz took an extended hiatus through the 90’s and 2000’s, with their return only coming in 2011 for a compilation album. Transition State is the band’s first album of new material since Roll The Dice back in 1991.
Long-time fans of Oz can rejoice in the fact that the band is better than ever. Everything has been leveled up from Oz’s earlier material, including the album production which was problematic on their earlier releases. Original drummer and founding member Mark Ruffneck’s drumming is aggressive, tight, and powerful. Vince Kojvula’s vocals are cutting, focused, and passionate. The dual guitar attack of Johnny Cross and Juzzy Kangas is locked-in and perfectly executed for this genre.
Transition State is not only an excellent comeback album for Oz, but it is also a welcome new addition to the lasting legacy of Classic Heavy Metal and New Wave of British Heavy Metal. This album is very consistent all the way through and will make a perfect headbanging road trip album for any veteran metal fan.
