( votes)Marking their first new album in 14 years, The Storm is a well-honed Traditional Power Metal release that has all the accessibility of acts like Hammerfall and Accept, but with the driving intensity of Bloodbound and Primal Fear. Voice has successfully blown off the dust and come back stronger than ever on this excellent return-to-form release.
A huge drum sound, harmonized guitars, gritty yet melodic vocals…everything Power Metal fans love, it’s all here. Most of these songs are guitar riff driven, with a few exceptions like “Business Roulette” which features heavier orchestration. That track in particular has a noticeably Symphony-X feel to it. “When Night Falls” is another nice change-up on The Storm, with its power ballad meets mid-tempo headbanging vibe. Most of the other tracks range from mid-tempo to fast-but-not-Dragonforce-fast Power Metal speeds.
With excellent vocals, songwriting, and production, it’s hard to find faults here. While there may be some pedestrian lyric themes, this is what fans have come to demand from this genre. All around, this is a strong and enjoyable release that almost any metal fan will find something within to groove on. We can only hope that there won’t be another 14 years before the next release.
