( vote)Like a handful of other Classic Metal acts, Jack Starr’s post-’90s hiatus releases are his best. Stand Your Ground is no exception. The lineup on this album is similar to the previous release, Land Of The Dead, despite the 6 year gap. Todd Michael Hall returns to confidently fill the lead vocal position, along with ex-Manowar member Rhino on drums. Hall’s vocals continue to be excellent and are a highlight of this release.
It’s worth noting that the numerous top notch performances on Stand Your Ground really serve the album well. The songwriting is good, but rather often by-the-numbers. Thanks to Hall’s vocals, and Rhino’s drumming, these songs are rescued from being just okay, and elevated to truly excellent status.
Tracks like “The Sky Is Falling” and “Escape From The Night” fall squarely in mid-tempo Traditional Power Metal territory, with heartfelt “get on your horse and ride” style lyrics. The more speedy numbers, such as “Hero” and “Stronger Than Steel” lean more heavily towards a Judas Priest vibe. The latter of those tracks in particular, features an excellent example of Hall’s vocal prowess.
Stand Your Ground will sit nicely on the shelf next to some of the other great, recent Traditional Metal releases from RIOT, Iron Maiden, and Attic Demons. Put on your leather chaps, strap on your sword and crank this up!
