( votes)Lies, Hopes & Other Stories is the second release from Italian Hard Rock band Starsick System. Formed in 2012, Starsick System is composed of veteran musicians. Fronted by Vocalist/Guitarist Marco Sandron, who had previously been in Pathosray, Eden’s Curse, and Fairyland, he is joined by two members of Syrayde, Guitarist David Donati as well as Bassist Valeria Battain. Completing the band, Drummer Ivan Moni Bidin of Pathosray and Syrayde come on behind the kit.
Their first release, Daydreamin’ was released in 2015, and was well received, garnering the band an opening spot on tour with Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society. Starsick System has a very Modern Hard Rock flavor, with lush keyboards, tight double bass drumming, and shredding guitars. The record is very musical, and Sandron’s gravelly vocals drive the excellent melodic content. There is some tasteful use of growls as well. The songs are flush with hooks and riffs that catch the ear immediately. The only minor weak points are the overuse of the wah wah pedal on lead guitars, and track one, “Nebulous”, an instrumental piece that sounds like a movie soundtrack, but never really goes anywhere. The other 10 songs on the record are very good, and include a cover of the late Chris Cornell’s song “You Know My Name”, from the Casino Royale Soundtrack. Recorded before the singer’s untimely passing, what was a good reinterpretation becomes a fitting tribute. Fans of modern Metal and Hard Rock will enjoy Lies, Hopes & Other Stories.
