The Phoenix is the fifth studio release from American Alternative Metal, Stoner Metal, Post Grunge band CKY (Camp Kill Yourself). The band spent 8 years on hiatus due to conflicts between front man Deron Miller and guitarist Chad Ginsburg, which appear to have been resolved by Ginsburg assuming vocal duties as well, and Miller departing the group. That said, the overall sound of CKY hasn’t changed much. Vocals are heavily processed to compensate for ability, and very basic song structure is the framework for The Phoenix, with a slight emphasis on a more commercially viable sound on “Replaceable” and “The Other Ones”.

The lineup is rounded out by Bassist Matt Deis, and Drummer Jess Margera, brother of skateboarder and Jackass alum Bam Margera. The connection to Jackass and their placement within that franchise is the primary reason CKY earned a large and loyal fan base: the CKY Alliance. The hordes of fans the Jackass franchise attracted exposed many to the band’s particular brand of Skate Punk music. Overall, the record is well-produced, but not great. The Phoenix probably won’t earn them many new fans, but for the members of the CKY Alliance, this will certainly be a welcomed release. Fans of Stoner Metal and Skate Punk should give a listen.

Stevie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio. He is currently the lead guitarist for Melodic Rock band Red Reign, based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Red Reign toured with Tesla in 2017, and shared the stage with Dokken, FireHouse, Lita Ford, Kix, Quiet Riot, and others at various dates around the US in 2018. Stevie heard his first KISS record at the age of 6 and was immediately hooked on Rock and Roll guitar. Over the course of years his tastes evolved, graduating from KISS to Ozzy and Van Halen; and then into Hair Metal. Over time, harder and faster music drew him. Bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax led the way, and Killswitch Engage took him over the top. Stevie has a deep passion for the guitar, not only playing them, but building them as well.
