( votes)Power Metal as a genre is often criticized for self-parody, redundancy, and one dimensional songwriting. Fortunately, Kaledon is aware of these issues and constantly takes steps to avoid these all too common pitfalls. Caranagus: Emperor Of The Darkness, finds Kaledon continuing to develop its sound and style. With a fully modern production and sonic signature, established Power Metal elements such as lyric themes of witches, kings, armies of the undead, and telepathy, feel renewed and fresh.
This ten track release contains all of the above mentioned themes and more, all delivered with a huge, saturated, down-tuned sound. This release will please fans of Kaledon’s earlier work, as well as those who enjoyed Symphony X’s recent releases and possibly the latest Firewind album. Kaledon manages to maintain a certain level of raw aggressiveness throughout the release, never going too deep down the prancing, fairy pan pipe keyboard solo rabbit hole. They even manage to slip in some more aggressive vocal styles on “Trapped On The Throne”. Heavier tracks like “The End Of The Undead” successfully mix catchy, melodic elements with biting, chunky slabs of overdriven guitar.
Highlights include “The Evil Witch”, “The Two Bailouts”, and “The End Of The Undead”.
