( votes)If you feel there aren’t enough references to Satan in Metal these days, then fear not because the devil is in the music with Dirge For The Archons by Diabulus In Musica. But instead of a blackened goat, think more of a crystalline astral god as this Symphonic album opens with a choral anthem on par with the classic “O Fortuna” and impales you on a shimmering spike.
This is the fourth of DIM’s albums, which they have been releasing consistently every two years since 2010. The record is clean and flowing. Gorka Elso’s growls compliment Zuberoa Aznárez, whose operatic vocals coat the band’s turbulence in a delicate beauty. Listen to “A Speck In The Universe” for an example of her silky chops.
Overall, you get familiar Symphonic Metal with this record. Each track has a unique place, however. “Ring Around The Fairie’s Carousel” belongs in a Tim Burton film. And “Bane” is the most catchy track and a whole story in itself. There’s a lot to analyze here, which allows repeat playability and makes this well worth a purchase.
