( votes)The Roth Brock Project’s self-titled debut album may be the finest possible encapsulation of late ’80s to early ’90s Melodic Hard Rock. If you could take all the strengths of Winger, Hardline, Tyketto, Europe, Firehouse and the like, but none of their weaknesses, and somehow create an amalgamation of everything great about those bands injected with 2016’s crisp, tight production techniques, you would have the Roth Brock Project. This completely new band (of Hard Rock veterans) seems to have crafted the ultimate “cruising with the top down” album. Terry Brock’s voice soars high above a bed of tasty guitar riffs and perfectly balanced keyboard lines while the album also boasts some of the richest and fullest background vocals to be found on any Melodic Hard Rock album released within the last two decades (notably impressive on “Never Givin’ Up”).
Despite the genre being more than well-defined, the Roth Brock Project somehow manage to deliver fresh sounding songs and unexpected twists, such as the bridge on closing track “Reason To Believe”. The fact that they can do this within such a well-tread style is truly admirable.
Highlights include “Young Gun”, “We Are”, “Fighter” and “Never Givin’ Up”. Find some bikini babes to wash your V12 Jaguar while you crank this on the front lawn.
