( votes)The Stage, the seventh studio album by Avenged Sevenfold (A7X), is brimming with brilliant sonic highlights and strong songwriting. Yet, despite having a clear cosmological theme, The Stage lacks the sense of unity and cohesiveness that previous A7X albums have offered. Songs like “God Damn”, “Higher” and the 15-minute “Exist” feature the band at its heaviest, while tracks such as “Angels” and “Creating God” find the band squarely in Alternative Rock territory.
In typical Avenged Sevenfold style, the title track “The Stage” has an anthemic, sing-a-long vibe despite stretching itself out to eight and a half minutes. The band has released a bizarre, politically charged, puppet music video for the title song. While it seems to have been downplayed somewhat in the album’s promotional material, The Stage is a concept album that may be best enjoyed with a full set of lyric sheets. Lyrics are deep, guitar solos are blazing, yet as a complete work the album feels as if it lacks a sense of purpose and closure.
