Signum Regis is a Neoclassical / Progressive / Melodic Metal band from Slovakia led by famed Swedish vocalist Goran Edman. The band was founded in 2007 by bassist and songwriter Ronnie Konig, and in 2008 they released their self-titled debut album. Their latest album, The Eyes Of Power, is filled with multiple themes, styles, and genres. It is also a conceptual album revolving around historical events that defined Roman and Persian relations from the 3rd to 7th century A.D.

The musicianship of this band is extraordinary. Of the nine tracks on this album, three of them are instrumental. The dual guitar Neo-classical solos are very reminiscent of classic Yngwie Malmsteen work. All of the instruments are recorded with very tight precision. When you add Goran Edman’s clean, high-pitched vocals to the mix, it completes the entire performance. These guys sound like very seasoned performers and it’s obvious there is a lot of talent within this band, especially from guitarists Flip Kolus and Ado Kalaber (who are aged 22 and 28, respectively). Outside of Edman’s pristine vocals, the guitars ultimately define the sound of Signum Regis.

As mentioned, the album does feature several different themes and genres. Although it is predominantly Neo-Classical and Progressive, there are bits and pieces of Thrash, Classic, and Epic Power Metal. These components do make the album unique, but there are some areas where it seems they are doing too much. Some of the themes do not gel very well together… even within the same song.

There are a couple of songs that stand out on this album. One of them is “Mystical Majesty”, which has the feel of a classic Dio song. Edman shows off his full range during this track by transitioning some grungy low notes to his signature high runs. It’s also a slower vocal-driven melodic song with some very heavy riffs. The other song worth mentioning is the instrumental “Roma Aeterna”, which is also a slower song. It begins with a haunting piano intro and segues into a beautiful melodic guitar opus featuring some great Neoclassical style solos.

Ultimately, The Eyes Of Power is a very impressive piece of work. Musically, materially, and artistically Signum Regis does achieve some new levels in Metal. The only downside may be the shortness of the album coming in at only nine tracks. It also seems to be missing the one epic song that culminates the entire album. Other than that, it is unique and fresh and definitely worth a listen.

His father bought him his first record, Kiss Alive II, at age 6. By the time he reached his teens he was discovering all the Classic Metal of the 1980’s; Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister, etc. He became a huge fan of the Thrash Metal of the time as well; Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, and Overkill. During the 1990’s he experimented with the Grunge and Hard Rock. However, by the time the millennium came he found himself going back to his roots and rebuilt the music collection he started in his teens.
