In 1997, I had the opportunity to interview GWAR, a unique and captivating band on the brink of releasing their sixth album, Carnival of Chaos. Despite not being heavily familiar with their music at the time, I was well aware of their monstrous image that had captured the attention of many. The band’s reputation for dousing their audience in “blood” during live shows was something my friends experienced firsthand when they attended a GWAR concert in Oslo a couple of years earlier.
As I prepared for the interview, I anticipated speaking with the band’s lead singer, unsure whether it would be as his stage persona, Oderus Urungus, or as his real name, Dave Brockie. To my surprise, it was Oderus Urungus himself who called, transforming the interview into an unforgettable encounter with an extraterrestrial being. From the very beginning, Oderus confidently declared, “I can f***ing run my mouth, that’s for sure!” And indeed, he lived up to his words, engaging in a lively conversation unlike any other.
RIP Dave Brockie (1963–2014)
